A Protection From Abuse order is a civil court order designed to protect victims of domestic violence. Filing is free, and emergency orders can be obtained the same day — including after hours from on-call judges.

Who Can File a PFA?
Relief Available Under a PFA
No-contact order
Prohibits the abuser from contacting, harassing, or stalking the victim.
Eviction from shared residence
The court can order the abuser to leave the shared home.
Temporary custody
The court can award temporary custody of minor children to the victim.
Temporary support
The court can order the abuser to pay temporary support to the victim.
Firearms surrender
The abuser must relinquish all firearms and ammunition within 24 hours (§ 6108(a)(7)).
Other relief
Counseling, restitution, and any other appropriate relief the court deems necessary.
The PFA Process
File the Petition
File a PFA petition at the courthouse or with the on-call judge after hours. Filing is FREE — no fees are charged.
Temporary Emergency Order
A judge reviews the petition the same day. If granted, a Temporary PFA is effective immediately (up to 10 business days).
Service on the Defendant
The Sheriff serves the defendant with the Temporary PFA and a notice of the hearing date.
Final Hearing
A hearing is held within 10 business days. Both sides can present evidence and testimony.
Final PFA Order
If granted, a Final PFA can last up to 3 years (with possible extensions). Violation is a criminal offense.
